Energy Programs

Energy is integral to economic, social and human development.

Access to affordable, reliable, efficient, and clean energy empowers people to make the leap from poverty to a more economically secure future. People, homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses need energy to power lights, run equipment, draw water, and enable communications. Stable sources of energy are the lifeblood of thriving economies and power agriculture, industry, transportation, and commercial enterprises.

AED aims to strengthen the enabling environment and policies needed to support energy options for sustainable development. AED provides energy solutions that integrate social, economic and environmental objectives for empowering people. AED’s work in energy focuses on capacity building and public outreach in the energy sector, including energy efficiency, governance, regulation, public participation, regional cooperation, and program design and evaluation.

Efficiency

The limited supply of fossil fuels, intense global competition and surging consumer demand challenges all nations to make the most of their energy resources. AED provides the tools to meet that challenge, helping policymakers, energy professionals and citizens adopt cost-effective ways to generate, distribute and use energy more efficiently and sustain economic growth and stability.

Governance

Sound energy sector management and governance are necessary conditions for a well functioning energy sector. Good governance addresses the effectiveness of public institutions and their ability to reflect the needs and interests of society in a fair, transparent, and sustained manner. AED helps governments create policy frameworks that support a consistent regulatory and governance framework, promoting free markets and encouraging trade and investment in the energy sector.

Regulation

The convergence of energy sector reforms and democratic principles is frequently found in an independent regulatory body that serves as both overseer of energy reforms and protector of all stakeholders - government, utilities, investors and consumers. Energy regulators face challenges that are local and global, economic and environmental, policy-based and consumer-driven. In areas ranging from regulatory reform and sector restructuring to management skills and regional cooperation, AED gives energy regulators the tools they need to balance competing priorities, find innovative solutions and help drive economic growth.

Public Participation

Effective public involvement can be measured by the quality of information available to the public, the effectiveness of public participation mechanisms, and the extent to which the regulatory body seeks interaction with the public. AED works with stakeholders including policymakers, utilities, consumers, investors and businesses to encourage dialogue and public participation in decision making that shapes effective policies and laws governing the energy sector.

Regional Cooperation

Regional cooperation offers neighboring countries a unique opportunity to share ideas and solutions for their common concern: developing, maintaining and maximizing sustainable sources of energy. Through innovative, practical training programs, AED equips policymakers and energy professionals with tools to forge strong ties across borders that benefit both nations and regions.

Program Design & Evaluation

Capturing knowledge and experience from ongoing programs can provide important insights to funding agencies and enhance energy sector development. AED specializes in utilizing the qualitative and quantitative tools and methodologies to capture lessons learned and best practices that will foster sustainable development in the energy sector.
