Program History Since March 1998, through USAID's Global Training for Development Project, AED has been sponsoring the Young Leaders for Peace and Development program in the South Caucasus. AED has collaborated with both US organizations (Legacy International, Children's Creative Response to Conflict, Youth for Understanding (YFU), the Alliance for Conflict Transformation (ACT), the United Methodists Committee on Relief (UMCOR), and the Carter Center) and several Georgian, Abkhazian and Armenian non-governmental organizations to provide in-country, third country, and US-based activities for young leaders from Abkhazian and Georgia. The program has received the attention and strong support from Georgian, Abkhazian, Armenian, United Nations, the OSCE and US Government officials in Georgia, thus contributing to greater public awareness of various national reconciliation and peace building efforts in the Caucasus Region. As of May 2003, there are 15 Young Leaders Groups involving 510 participants on both sides of the conflict. Growing from just 60 participants in 1998, the Young Leaders for Peace and Development program has presented a tremendous opportunity to promote youth leadership development and conflict resolution in the South Caucasus. The Youth Development Program and its various components have been successful so far in building a bridge of friendship, understanding, communication and dialogue among teenage war victims of the Georgian and Abkhazian conflict.
