Diaspora Skills Transfer Program for Southern Sudan

The Diaspora Skills Transfer Program for Southern Sudan is being implemented by the Academy for Educational Development (AED) under the FORECAST contract from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to address critical shortages in areas of health and education. The program enables skilled, experienced and educated Southern Sudanese living outside the region to return on a volunteer basis to assist with developing human skills and institutional capacities in health and education sectors. The transfer of skills and the development of linkages with the region provides sustainable support for reconstruction in the region and reconnection with those outside Southern Sudan. AED is subcontracting with the International Executive Service Corps (IESC), which helps in the recruitment of volunteers through its Sudanese North American Diaspora Database (SNADD).

Working closely with Diaspora organizations and others interested in supporting the reconstruction of Southern Sudan, AED identifies potential volunteers throughout the Southern Sudanese Diaspora communities. Since February 2006, AED has sent over 77 volunteers to 25 locations in Southern Sudan and the transition areas of Southern Blue Nile and Southern Kordofan.

While the Diaspora Program is scheduled to end in March 2007, a limited number of volunteer placements may be available in January and February 2007. AED will continue to accept and place applications on file for potential future assignments, should the program be continued.
