Diaspora Skills Transfer Program for Southern Sudan

Diaspora Volunteer Program

As volunteers with Diaspora Skills Transfer Program, Southern Sudanese Diaspora can contribute to the development and reconstruction of their country. Experienced and educated Southern Sudanese from the Diaspora return on a voluntary basis to provide assistance in areas of health and education.

All volunteer tasks are identified by the Ministries of Health and Education in Southern Sudan, based on specific needs at the national, state or local level. Tasks include:

  • Highly focused activities in response to needs identified by the Southern Sudan Secretariats of Health and Education. These short-term tasks are for experienced professionals, who can provide technical advice and assist with technical, policy, institutional and systems analysis, and development; who can provide or support training programs.
  • Less technical, but sector-specific activity tasks in education and health care for example, teaching, providing medical technology assistance, etc

AED provides air travel, small monthly stipends, travel and living expenses, medical insurance, and medical evacuation insurance to volunteers for their service. The amount of stipend is modest compared to compensation provided to other internationals working in the region.

All volunteers must meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated technical skills in critical education and/or health fields;
  • Previous professional and/or volunteer experience;
  • Ability to train colleagues or transfer skills to others.
  • Commitment to rebuilding South Sudan, noting potential resources to assist the process;
  • Ability and willingness to work and live under stressful conditions;
  • Sensitivity to potential resentment volunteers may face on return to South Sudan as well as a capacity to manage successfully these kinds of situations;
  • Other criteria as needed for specific volunteer placements.
