This included monitoring the scholars' academic progress and welfare, maintaining communications with their professors and advisors, and helping them adjust to the U.S. higher education system. The scholars were staff members of the Republic of Indonesia's Ministry of Education participating in the Asian Development Bank-funded Junior Secondary Education Project to strengthen the secondary school system in the country.
